My 11 year old son would love to move up to an Alpine board. His coach thinks it would be a good thing to do, although it will take some time for him to get used to. We just want our son to have fun, to do the best he can and let the gear help. So we`ll only buy gear if it is right for him, at this time.
But we`re having two problems:
- finding a carving board that is the right weight and flex for him
- finding a board (and boots and bindings) that we can afford. Given the prices that we`re seeing for new Alpine carve boards (Coiler, etc.), we just can`t afford to buy new.
So, we`d be grateful for your help in a couple of areas:
1. What length, weight and other physical / design specs should we look for? Ditto for the bindings and hard boots.
2. What brand names and models should we keep an eye out for? Board? Bindings? Hard Boots? I`ve found afew websites with used gear (including e-bay), but I need to know what makes and models are right.
3. Where might we look to find a used board, bindings and hard boots? I`ve found afew websites selling used boards, so I`ve got a start. But I want to expand my search.
FYI, my son weighs 80 lbs, rides about a 135 cm (total length) board, is 4 foot 10 inches tall and takes a size 24.5 boot (about a 6 to 6 1/2).
Thanks for your help.

Check out priorsnowboards.com
They are manufacturers of custom boards out of Whistler. They have an excellent track record on the world cup. As well as some very well priced alpine boards they also have a number of demo and used boards listed on their website. I`ve been riding their wcr (world cup race) and their all-mountain freestyle boards for a while and they are awesome. In particular, they should be able to come up with something that meets your sons particular requirements without costing you much more than an off the shelf board.
