I got last year's model, and absolutely love them. They're super comfortable, secure, and easy as hell to get and out of. Definetely worth the cash.

I really don't get it. Burton creates a step-in and suddenly everybody want one. True, they have propably spent sick amount of $$$ on R&D, but there were and are a few others out there that have been making stepins for year(Clicker, Switch, Device, Emery SIS). Even the highback mounted on the binding is old news(I don't know who where first, but SIS and Device was early) So why is everybody so stoked about the SI binding? Is it so much better then the others? Is it the performace? It's supposed to be the one with the most play. Is it the boots?

Anyway, the choise of stepin systems increase. Everybody is making models with external highbacks. Makes sence. Both Switch and K2 bindings is produced on license on another brand name(Drake, Nitro). Maybe they can become standard stepin interfaces. The choise of boots are increasing too, just check out the switch website. Impressive list. K2 got a nice range of boots too. Device and SIS look ok, but it looks like they're not selling as much as K2, Burton and Switch.

Basically there are two types of stepin bindings, toe-heel connected(Clicker, Device) and sideconnected(Switch, SI, SIS, etc.). There are some other oddball versions to, like Salomon pilot... How the enginers came up with that system is hard to understand. Doesn't salomon have experience with alpine bindings too? Well, both sidemounted and toe-heelmounted are just as secure when locking you in, but the toe-heel system give better toe-heel response and less play. Sidemounted bindings compensate with a stiffer sole. The toe-heel mounted boots have a just as stiff sole anyway.

I guess Burton will be the most selling stepin binding this year, switch and clickers on the next two places, then device and SIS. In a few years I guess that most riders will use some kind of a stepinbinding.

Funny thing, someone told me that stepins was going to be a big flop and disapear a few years ago...

Similar to bindings years ago, SI's will probably evolve to a system that becomes a standard, such as 4x4-3d. This is the best answer for consumers. Looking at boots, a boot should be able to have clicker and switch compatability together. I suspect that will be the next evolution

I suppose Burton makes a standard for themselves and will have the marketshare to do it too.

However, I can't see the other systems cooking down to one...

why not? can you imagine how well a comfortable boot with attachments to clickers and switch would sell? i was thinking....you know how if you look at the bottom of a switch-compatible boot, the metal thing is just screwed to the boot, right? i bet you could unscrew it and take it off, thereby leaving yourself a regular soft boot. (ok with holes in the bottom). and since the clicker attachments are on the heel and toe, and the switch part is in the middle, they shouldn't interfere with each other at all. it's entirely possible should some company manage to get licensing for both. this could effectively be considered one system....

I would not get caugth up in the play of the Burton bindings. If you want to get rid of the play get hard boots. The Burton system imitates a strap-in binding and that is what they have stated for the many years they were supposed to be released, but were not. When you strap in there is always play and the SI just imitates it. My two cents.
