Every parent nowadays is asking the BIG question: When is the right time to let my kid learn how to snowboard? However there are also other considerations such as cost and equipment. We will try to give you some short advise to ease your minds.
So, when should a child start to snowboard?
So, when should a child start to snowboard?
Kids might have more fun on a sled and not necessarily on a snowboard. A certain level of coordination abilities and muscular strength is needed to ride, so we advise the age of 7 years. This is also the minimum age that most resorts will allow kids to start attending lessons.
Should I teach my child on my own or sign them up for lessons?
A lesson is the definite answer to this question. Lessons are taught by professional instructors and are usually done so in small groups with other kids. Both these factors enhance the child’s ability to learn and increase their fun when just starting out. You will have enough time to share your love for the sport with your child when they have learned the basics and can ride on their own.
What about equipment?
There is suitable equipment for kids. Your child will need waterproof snow clothing, board, boots and bindings (recommended soft at first).
Getting the right size is important, so get professional advice when buying or renting. Protective gear such as a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads are essential at the very least. This will make the first days a lot less painful. Layering is the best way to dress, so you can add or take off clothes as you go along depending upon the weather. The outer layer should be waterproof since your child will fall a lot in the snow when learning how to ride. And do not forget your gloves and goggles!
Rent or buy?
Renting is a good option for the beginning. Until you are sure your child really will keep up the sport it is the best and most economical way. Some resorts sell packages of rented equipment and lift tickets, so that is the best way to start. When you are ready to buy, do not be tempted to buy all equipment a bit too big for the child to grow into. Correctly fitted equipment is safer and makes it easier to learn.
Know that not all resorts are snowboarding friendly, so make sure the one you want to take your children to, does allow snowboarding. Some resorts offer free lift tickets for kids, so it is definitely worthwhile to check out these places to go for a family outing.
The cost of a daily rental package of board bindings and boots with lift tickets will cost about 35USD per child. A full day lesson including equipment and lift tickets costs 150USD. Look for resorts that offer a package of 3 lessons and equipment, this can cost 250 to 350USD but it is worth it.
Last but not least, snowboarding can be fun and there are lessons for adults, so do not be afraid to engage in a fun sport with your children. You might end up being just as exited about it as they are.
