My third year riding and it's time for a new rig. I'm 170lbs, size 10 foot. Ride mostly groomed, occasional pow at Whistler. Dealer says Burton Supermodel 163 is real sweet. Is this a good board for me? Comments from those in the know would be appreciated.

The SM's are nice boards. Good for pow and groomers. The only problem I had with mine was it lost it's flex after about 50 days riding.

You probably didn't like the Burton because I'm figuring you rode a supermodel, which unless you have a small feet, isn't that great of a board. Snowboard mag rates the Burton as one of the best, all time. I ride a Burton Custom....have also ridden the same boards as you, but stick with Burton because they rock. sorry brother...but Never Sumemr is not that great..my friend in CO is a board instuctor..doens't like the brand at all and recommends his new boarders not to purchase Never Summer because they have poor selection, not very much durability and will only last you a year...the re-sell value also is poor.

Why the down on the Supermodel? I'm interested because I was thinking of buying one this season. I have heard previous models had too much flex, lost their camber etc. But is there a reason your instructor friends panned them?

TIA

Not sure as to why anybody'd be down on it, but it is a cruising board first and foremost. It's a really lazy rider, and if you have a good powder day and just want to rock back and surf, it rules.

Outside of those conditions, it loses a little of its charm (though I have used a Supermodel 168 in Slopestyle and Boardercross in the past *B^) ); it's a pretty soft board, and they recommend getting one 10cm longer than what you'd typically ride. My Supermodel 173 is a spot on great ride, but for more varied conditions, I like my Nidecker's (Megalight and Boarder) better. Basically, if you want a Jack of all trades board, and like the feel of the Super, and also like Burton's, check out a Johan (do they still make them?).

Yup, a 163.

Agreed completely on the Supermodel - give it powder and you'll never want to leave the hill - give it anything else and it loses some of its sparkle - it doesn't turn into a pig, it's just not as nice...
