Everything else being equal, and if you are landing at DIA, I would go for Loveland. A straight shot from the airport to Pena Blvd to I-70 west straight thru Denver and right up to Loveland. The I-70 tunnel actually splits Loveland. Probably about 100 miles from the airport or a little less.
However, traffic, weather and accidents can drastically change the scenario. Other options might be Eldora, or if you enjoy high mountain passes with no guardrails and 1,000 foot drops, A-Basin over Loveland Pass.
Other airports are Centennial Airport (24th busiest in the USA, or something like that), or Jefferson County (which recently was closed due to 9/11 and closeness to restricted areas - but may be open now, I really don`t know).
For both, the same statement applies about Loveland.
There are airports in the mountains, but, unless you are an experienced mountain pilot, it is dangerous - even experienced pilots crash at Aspen and Eagle and going over the mountains.
Have fun. (FOX FAMILY WEB PAGE)
