Hi all,
I have an artist friend who is custom painting a design on the top of my snowboard deck. After he's completed the artwork what's the best way "finish" the top of the deck and protect the artwork and still be able use it to ride? thanks!

The boards are usually exposed to rain, sleet, and snow(something like that), very cold temps, intense solar radiation, the flexing of the snowboard, and impacts (landing air). You pick what applies to you and find a competent paint person. The person most likely will need to know what the top sheet is made of, and what the paint is.

The guy is used to painting skateboard decks which are put to some of the same physical extremes of a snowboard but not necessarily the same environmental conditions. the board he's doing the paint job on is a K2 Spire. I think he's using some form of acrylic paint. I'll have to ask him about covering the acrylic with some type of clear-coat finish to protect the paint. thanks for your quick answer.

After numerous discussions with the painter we finally went with a automotive clear-coat finish for the board. It won't yellow, has flexibility and is weather durable.

I'm thinking about custom painting mine. Your friend used acrylic paint right? Do you know what automotive clear-coat brand your friend used? I'm trying to avoid the paint from cracking because that seems to be the main con against custom painting the board. THanks.

I'll try and find out. Knowing him though, he probably used something very basic. I do know that he said that the clear coat was reported to not "fade" or "yellow" when subjected to intense sunlight. Hope that helps

Thanks. If you could find out what kind of paint, that'd be great. Could you also ask how many layers of clear coat to apply? Or maybe you know. I forget where i read it, but i think i read that one person did about 50.

Sounds like you got some good clear coat. You want the clear coat (and the paint if possible) to be UV resistant. That is what will keep the colors from dulling and the coat from yellowing over time. I've heard people recommend Marine Varnish before for this application. Check out your local boating supplier.
