I will be driving from Boston to Killington in about 10 days time. This is my first time skiing on the east coast, and I am wondering what the typical driving conditions are at this time of year. I will be renting a car in Boston, and am wondering whether I am likely to need chains.

You really haev nothing to worry about, Try not to leave on a Friday after 330pm-730pm too much traffic either leave earlier or just wait til traffic dies down, your only problem if its snowing would be the nid section of 89 from exit 6-14 usually gets snow covered more than anything else, otherwise its easy cruising, dont miss the turn off 89 for rt 4 if you do its a long way on 89 to turn around Ant

When we left Stowe we were told by the hotel staff that you won`t make it to Boston as the storm was coming up from the south and conditions were already bad in Stowe.
Road conditions on the Interstate ( 89? ) were very poor in Vermont. Snow/ice on both carriageways and only the occasional snow plough was seen. This was not helped by the trucks drivers who seemed to be oblivious to the conditions and continued to drive at 70mph regardless.
The biggest problem I had was getting through the avalanche of snow/ice thrown over us every time a truck overtook us. It was scary stuff I can tell you...........
However as soon as we crossed the state line into New Hampshire the road conditions changed dramatically. They had an army of snow ploughs and gritting machines out and this carried on into Massachusetts.
We made it to Boston and remarkably also got the flight back to London on schedule - although it was only 1 or the 3 that departed from terminal ( E? ) in the 7 hours we were there.

*Yes, someone I was riding with actually did this. We spun off the road into a snowbank, but were able to dig ourselves out pretty easily. No one was injured, and nothing was damaged, aside from the driver`s ego.
