The best way to prevent being injured when snowboarding is to wear safety gear, especially when you are just starting out. Wrist and elbow pads will break falls and knee pads are also going to ease up falls and prevent more serious injuries. A tail bone pad is also good when starting out because all beginners fall down on their backside plenty.
Learn how to fall in order to protect your shoulders. A good snowboarding instructor can give you some tips, but a surprising source of falling safely is Judo. Go to your nearest sports club for some falling tips. Even if you are a good skier, the snowboard is very different as your feet are both bound to a single object. Take lessons from a professional instructor, and wear the protective gear. This precaution will make your time on the mountain safe and much more fun!
