Hey everyone my name is Christin and I am new to snowboarding. I have only really been about 4 times becuase I don't live near any slopes but I do want to get better. I was wondering how long it takes to get good at it. Anyone have some ideas on how to practice and get good?

Welcome to the forum Christin and welcome to snowboarding. I can tell you that it is different for everyone. WHen I first started it took me about a week of solid practice before I was getting the hang of it and taking turns well. If you are falling a lot, do not worry as this is how you learn. The key is to stick with it.

I guess I am just going to repeat what Jess said in her post. You need to keep with it no matter what and eventually you will get better. If you want to learn to take turns easily then you must always keep the weight on your front foot. Other then that just have fun!!!!

I am fairly new to snowboarding as well and man has it taken over my life. The first time I went it took me a good 3 days to get up for more then a few minutes. This is one fun sport. With each time that I go I am seeing some slow improvement along the way. Good Luck!!!

WHen I first started out I did a lot of reading about how to do it properly. I also practiced with my stance when I was not on the slopes. This really worked well for me and I would really reccomend trying it out.

One thing that works for most people is getting lessons. Your friends, boyfriend, etc. can only go so far in teaching you to ride. Instructors on the other hands have seen it all and can adjust to your particular style of learning. Not to mention that they have tons of patience! Snowboard school is your friend.

I must say that I learned snowboarding the hard way. I remember myself crashing tiem after time for days, and than weeks till my skill improved.
No doubt having an instructor is more fun and way faster, not to mention that if you have time limits you'll eb way better...

Cheers Matt,
I live in a place called Blyth, Northumberland - which is the North East of England - bordering Scotland.
We are the bit of England that has all the Mountains, and gets the biggest dumps of snow
Our season's due to start around the end of the month / November, and should last through to about March/April.
We're not spoiled like you guys though - when it snows here, everyone hits the slopes for a mad few days, then its gone again

Hope for a powdered year
My wife was born close the pole, having snow September to May...

Yep, getting lessons will help you progress so much faster. Another thing that will make it more fun is to avoid hurting your butt and Tailbone which is something that happens to a lot of people. My friend bought a thing called a Tailsaver which is a really simple bit of padding for your butt. It was cheap and it worked. Might be worth a look as it definitely makes the early days more enjoyable.

Is it something comfortable to move around with?

Yeah I've tried it and it's really flexible so it bends quite well to shape to your body. When you're riding you will hardly notice it. It just sits inside your pants and clips onto the back. You can hardly see it and it doesn't move much at all.

Make sure your pants can take the extra space the pad takes on your rear (uncompressed it is about an inch or less thick)

Very good advice as it is a lot easier and faster to learn with expert advice. Also you don't have to work on undoing bad habits that seem to have muscle memory.

Good to know they are not cumbersome, so you can still board freely with it.
Say, do you think that letting a beginner board with such pants will prevent him from collecting bad habits?

The bad habits ( harder and more time consuming to undue if left unchecked) are in regards to not having proficient people around in the early days to get technique as good as possible.
