My husband and I want to purchase 2way radios for our ski trips this year so when we get separated on the ski mountains we can locate each other. have been recommended to get a talk button on the side since I wear mittens, and to have a bright color so easily found when dropped in snow. any other must haves? and any suggestions as to what brand, model, etc. we should check out? thanks in advance dpa

I would recommend that the radio have the 38 subchannels. It seems all FRS`s have the basic 14 channels, but the 38 subchannels allow you to "block" some (not all) of the unwanted chatter. And, there are definitely lots of people on the slopes with radios these days. If you want, some brands even have scrambling. The Kenwood FRS radios have this. I think Cobra`s too.
I would also recommend a call feature, where you can transmit beeping or calling tones when calling your other party.
Almost all FRS`s have a range of generally 2 miles, with a direct, clear line of sight.
The Kenwood radio that I have has a button on the side, and sometimes it is still a little hard to push with gloves on.

I`ve seen a pair for sale in COSTCO for about $70 that included rechargeable battery pacs and a charger. Looked like a good deal to me.

I have 3 pair of FRS radios: first model. They are probably the clearest and best quality of the three pair I have. However, it only has one channel. But I would recommend the quality of Midland if you wanted to check out their other models.
Motorola FR50 2-Way Radios http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MO3K/ qid=1004719413/br=1... br_lf_e_6/107-5078259-2222944 My second set was a 14 channel pair of Motorola FR50 radios. I would NOT recommend Motorola. These are horrible. They are very noisy and their reception is really bad. Could be one of the pair I got is a lemon, but I`m not impressed with the quality.
Cobra FRS2202 Charcoal Micro Talk 2-Way Radio http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TKUH/ qid=1004719297/br=1... =br_lf_e_11/107-5078259-2222944 My third pair is a set of Cobra FRS2202 radios. This set is the best of the bunch. Extremely clear, great reception, 14 channels, and very inexpensive. The only negative is that they don`t have the 38 sub-channels, but 14 channel are enough for my occasional use. I have seen these in a local Fry`s Electronics store in Dallas in a blister pack of two for $30!

Those ARE a good deal. I have a set but it allows you to use regular batteries. That is a MUCH better deal because rechargeable batteries last about 1/3 the time as regular and you will not have an extra pack. Be sure you can put regular batteries in the radio. I go mine at Sam`s Club and they now only have the one with the rechargeable but have not checked if they take regular. Otherwise it is a GOOD deal > checked it out in fairly flat terrain in the city here and got almost 2 miles.

I missed the top of this thread. Do these sets work in ski resorts where there is valley to valley skiing ? I assumed that the mountains would get in the way and make them useless. Am I wrong ? If so, which is the best buy ?
