I`ve been tasked with organising a 10 day family ski trip for the new year around the middle of February, and would like to get some help with some resort suggestions in the US and Canada. This is to be our first trip skiing in the US (I`ve recently moved to Houston from Europe) and there`s just so many resorts to choose from.
The trip is for 9-10 adults and 2-3 children. Skills range from beginner (kids aged 5-8) through intermediate (2-4 seasons in Europe) to very experienced (6-10 seasons in Europe, happily skiing black runs).
We wish to rent a chalet with private hot tub for our group, and would also want to arrange for someone to cater for us (do you have chalet help like in Europe) as the kids make it difficult to go out every night.
I hope to have everyone fly in to Houston and then book flights from here to the resort. We`d like to have a drive from airport to resort of less than 2-3 hours as the kids get pretty stressful after that long (can you tell I`m the uncle!).
As we have the kids, vibrant night life isn`t the highest priority, but we`d like a resort that has some alternatives to skiing, as not everyone wants to ski solidly for the 10 days.
I know it`s a lot to ask, but if anyone could help us narrow the search down, I`d really appreciate it.

I`d recommend Summit County Colorado. Four major ski areas/resorts (Keystone Breckenridge, Copper Mountain & Arapahoe Basin) within a half hour drive plus Vail is about a half hour further. Check out snow.com for Vail resorts home page and then look at the various offerings. Summit County is about an hour and a half West from the Denver (DIA) airport.
Most of the rentals are condos, but I`m sure with a little digging you could find a house to rent that`s close to the slopes or on one of the free bus routes. Condos vary in size from a studio (suitable for one or two) to 3 bedroom plus sleeper sofas. Be sure to ask how many and what type of beds as the advertised sleeping capacity usually includes one or two sofa (foldout) beds. Good luck and I hope to see you on the slopes.

If this wasn`t the middle of Feb, I`d suggest Park City as there is some life there and has three large mountains right around it, plus Alta and Snowbird a half an hour away, but with the Olympics....
Aspen/Snowmass are too far from the airport unless you`re willing to fly into Aspen airport on a small jet (I`m not).
Consider the Lake Tahoe Region.

One word - Jackson Hole. Oops, that`s two words. Don`t let it`s reputation as an expert only area scare you. There is plenty of terrain for novices and intermediates. The airport is a short ride on the shuttle and there are numerous things to do other than skiing. The town of Jackson itself is a historic western town. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National parks are nearby. Stay in Teton Village and you can have the best of both worlds. Hot tubs, night life for the adults and places for the kids to play. Judging from what you are looking for, I would give it serious consideration.

Well, If you are going to look at Tahoe, you should look further south too. While President`s weekend is Mammoth and June Mountain`s busiest weekend--There is a reason. It is simply great skiing!! Check out www.mammothmountain.com and www.junemountain.com
BTW I don`t work for either, but I do live here
