Hello, everyone!
I have moved to Cambridge, MA, from Russia earlier this year and since my elder kid (13 years old) likes to snowboard, I want to take him to some place to do so. Can you please recommend any places not too far away? (1-hour ride?) Also apart from paid locations, are there any slopes/small hills available to public free of charge fit for snowboarding?
Thank you!

I'm sure New England is similar to Tahoe where I tend to live. There are more non resort places than resorts, and we have one of the highest concentrations of resorts if not the highest of any area. These open areas tend to be public forest.

There are some very serious concerns when going to a so called nonmonitered/ area not configured by so called experts. It is not my goal to scare you. "In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments. There are consequences." R.G. Ingersoll.

I have hundreds if not over 1 thousand hours of formal training in snowsport safety. I personally have not gone into very deep backcountry without at least 1 person I trust who is probably a very highly certified guide.

When not at a resort you need to be very careful about avalanches (any area above you around a 25 degree slope at minimum). There are many other things to consider too. I have had a lot of fun outside of resort settings.

Look for a safe hill/vicinity. Slope angle appropriate for your use. Not to fast, not to slow. What is below you if you don't stop (house,road,ect...)? Obstacles (trees, rocks, water, roads, ect...) that won't cause an issue. Snow conditions, is there to much powder (you don't want to literally die of suffocation because you couldn't get out of your bindings after wiping out) for a particular level. I also have never seen a groomed surface outside of resorts. Be prepared for any snow condition.

I can go on and on. hopefully this was worth reading for you.
